Second day
Visit to the fascinating church of San Simon in Vallada
Four kilometres far away from Canale d’Agordo in the direction of Cencenighe Agordino there is, in the midst of the woods, the wonderful Church of San Simon di Vallada, dating from 1185 and bearing a Fluegelaltar (polyptich) by Andreas Haller dating from 1520, a polyptich by Matteo Cesa (from 15th century), fascinating frescoes by Paris Bordon (1549) and an organ by Gaetano Callido from 1802. Opposite the church there is the old seat of the Confraternita dei Battuti built around 1354. On the parvis of the church there is a plaque commemorating Valerio Da Pos from Carfon, the rural poet (1740-1822). The church can be visited in the months of July and August (from Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 12.30am and from 4pm to 6.30pm).
Walk from San Simon to Feder and visit to the cooperative dairy
After the visit to the Church of St Simon, you can get to the village of Feder on foot after an one-hour walk, passing by the fascinating village of Carfon, dating from the 12th century. In the centre of the village there is the beautiful church dedicated to the Holy Spirit (1715) with works by Giovanni Fossa (1717) and Benedetto Da Pos (1831-1920).
Carfon is the birthplace of Valerio Da Pos (1740-1822), the rural poet – author of many critical sonnets and the only example of cultured peasant of the 18th century in the area – the sculptors Benedetto (1831-1920) and Amedeo Da Pos (1870-1966), authors of numerous wooden sculptures and drawings in churches and private villas throughout the province of Belluno, Trento and Venice. In Carfon there are examples of old wooden tabià (haylofts) of the 17th century.
Taking a dirt road towards Fregona and going beyond the small village, you reach the centre of Feder, where you can visit a very interesting museum in an old cooperative dairy of the late nineteenth century (for information, please consult the site of Ufficio Pro Loco in Canale d'Agordo). In the centre of the village you can see the small church where the future pope Albino Luciani celebrated the opening mass in September 1935.
Third day
Visit to Caviola
In the morning it is interesting to visit Caviola, where there is the very beautiful church of the ‘Madonna della Salute’ built in 1715, bearing two baroque altars from the 17th and the 18th centuries (from the workshop of the Auregnes and Costas), a closet probably by Marchiori (around 1715) and other works by local painters. Fr Felice Cappello (1879-1963, the so-called “Confessor of Rome”, was an altar boy in this Church. His process of beatification started in 1988 and the house where he was born can be seen in Via Cime d’Auta.
Leave the small church of Caviola behind and get to Tabiadon de Val through a path in the woods until you reach Sappade, where you can admire the small church of Santa Croce, dating from the 16th century. Inside, there is a very beautiful baroque altar, too, dating from the 17th century. In the village of Sappade, also called "village of the Sun", there are many examples of old tabià (haylofts). Sappade is the birthplace of Pietro Follador, a clergyman, vernacular poet and man of letters, who lived in the 19th century.
Leave Sappade behind and go on towards Valt, where there is a small church dating from 1859 with two old-age altars worth to be seen.
Visit to Falcade
If you go on walking along the path “delle Coste", which starts near Tabiadon de Canés, at the foot of the built-up area of Valt, through the hamlet of Costa you get to the villages of Somor and Falcade Alto, a small village rich in old pavements and haylofts. In its centre there is the beautiful Church of St Sebastian (15th century) with a Fluegelaltar (polyptich) from the 15th century and four baroque altars bearing works by Valentino Rovisi, Unterpergher and Giovanni Marchiori.
Coming down to the village Molino, it is possible to visit the museum dedicated to Augusto Murer, the sculptor. It was mounted by his son Franco, a sculptor too.
